Whole Child

With the teaching of values and student wellbeing a curriculum requirement in the classroom, there is a great need for teachers to communicate with each other to share strategies and ideas about how to best teach these skills and values. Bouncing ideas between educators, in the convenience of an online forum, can serve to inspire us and increase our creativity and desire to teach these essential life skills.

Let’s begin our online discussions in general terms about the necessity of teaching values and wellbeing in the classroom. Please join in and share your insights, wisdom and creativity on this subject. We need to support each other as we teach important life skills to Australia’s future generations!

Topic One

I have recently viewed the Whole Child program and I thought it was very specific and targeted this area well. Having poster talks and small novels will make it easy to fit these into a normal teaching day. Poster talks are very handy in the lower primary. We'll be doing them when we come in first thing in the morning to kick start our day!

The Whole Child.
I love the concept and need to let you know that since the middle of 2004 we have formulated our whole school vision around the Whole child. We are a small suburban school in Toowoomba. Our logo also incorporates the basic colour under the headings of Academic, Social/ emotional, cultural, community and cultural. We work a values program around this vision with all values being filtered through the 3 main values- RESPECT, RELATIONSHIPS and RESILIENCE. We are currently upgrading our website but feel to have a look at what we have done.

We have recently purchase Whole Child to use with our reception to year 7 students. Each year our school counsellor conducts an anti-bullying workshop with all classes. This year we decided to use the strand Getting Along and the Lower Primary level with all classes. Year levels came to the resource centre and the session began with discussions about how we get along with each other. People have good and bad days and the things that impact on how we feel at school.
We then read KICKBALL RULES from the smartboard. Students discussed Barney's behaviour and how we could respond in a positive and helpful way. Younger classes had their teacher as scribe while the other students wrote down their own responses.
The whole group came back together for a sharing session. Games played at school was discussed and what are good and fair rules. We emphasised fun, fair and safety when playing.
Their will be follow sessions in the resource centre this term. Some children have been heard saying 'you're playing like Barney' and then this child has asked for clarification. We believe this program will be of value to our students.
